Successful Online Virtual Events

When was the last time you purchased or sold something online, or hosted an online gathering or meeting? There are many venues and sites out there where you can use to host events, from Facebook to Forums and more. As a business owner, the big questions about virtual events are: How do you get people to come? and How can you encourage people to buy from you once they get there?
Today it seems like everyone is connected on social media, and that makes virtual events more attractive than ever. People don’t have to live in your backyard to participate. However, there are some specific steps you should take to enjoy more successful events. Here are some tips:
1.    Have a clear goal for the event. Will you be looking for sales? Encouraging people to network? Share an opportunity? Be very clear about what you want to happen so that people who come know what to expect.
2.    Invite several ways. Don’t just set up a Facebook Event and forget about it. Text, invite, call (gasp!)…let people hear from you BEFORE you send the official invitation, so that they know that it isn’t just spam. And then send 1 or 2 reminders leading up to the event, including an hour or so before, so people remember to log on.
3.    Make the invitation special and fun. If your event sounds boring they won’t come. So jazz up your invite with some personality, and make sure they know how much fun your event will be.
4.    Special offers. Be prepared to offer a discount, promotion, or other special to encourage attendance. People are more likely to come when there’s something it in for them.
5.    Be brief. Most online events are most successful when they are 30 minutes or less.
6.    Pick up the pace. Online, pace is everything. So be sure to keep things moving with new content and conversation pretty regularly during your event, so people remain engaged.
7.    Make it visual. Images and video clips can help your event remain engaging. Have several of these prepared so you can share them at the right moments during your event.
8.    Don’t overwhelm. If you try to pitch too many products or too many details, chances are you’ll turn off your audience. Instead, focus on a handful of reasonably-priced products or a few well-chosen details and schedule follow-up conversations with those who would like to learn more.
9.    Be social. Make sure you provide plenty of prompts and opportunity for conversation. People are more likely to convert if they are having fun interacting with others.
10. Provide a call to action. At the end of your event, be sure to provide a clear call to action related to your goal. If you want people to shop, tell them (and offer free shipping if they do so in the next 15 minutes(! If you want people to join, give them a link where they can do it. But be sure to ask for what you want, and provide an incentive to do it within the next 15 minutes.
11. Get their contact information. Online events are a wonderful way to make new connections, but be sure to follow up! The personal connection you can make with people comes after the online event is over. So send a message to each attendee asking if they have any questions, offering help based on conversations they’ve had during the event, and so on. The personal touch is likely to encourage those on the fence to make the leap.

12. Stay online after the event. Some people may not share their questions during the event. So be sure you let them know you’ll be around for another 30 minutes to offer personal service, answer questions, and provide help. The more available you are, the more likely it is that you’ll reach your goals for the event.
Today, online events are a part of the ever-evolving business landscape, and the ways we do business create great opportunities for those who can keep up and make business social. When you solve problems and position your business as easy and reliable, you can win customers who keep coming back, and refer their friends.

Have you attended or run online events for your business? What was the experience like? What would you like to improve about the experience? Would love to read your thoughts in the comments!

Your Social Media Marketing

Social media tools can be a wonderful way to increase your business’ visibility while also improving communication with existing customers. However it is not a “magic bullet,” and relying on social media exclusively to build your business is usually a mistake. That said, there are ways to improve the effectiveness of your social media marketing efforts, in order to increase your overall bottom line. Here are 5 tips to improve your social media marketing:
1.    Focus. Instead of jumping onto Facebook or Pinterest and getting swept away with posts from your friends, force yourself to focus on business objectives and goals for the time you’ve allotted for social media marketing for your business. Of course, this means that you need to HAVE some goals for your time. Think about what you’d like social media to do for your business, and write it down. Things like increasing reorders from existing customers, encouraging team members to reach their goals, etc. Then, when you go online, work on activities that are directly related to those goals.
2.    Find the Locals. Yes, social media tools can be great for reaching people far away. But it can be even more effective in helping you build deeper relationships with the people you know casually in your own community. So figure out where the locals hang out online. Is it a Facebook Page or Group for your church or town? A website set up for town issues? Find out where the people you know spend their time, and become actively involved. It’s a great way to build relationships which can ultimately help to increase your business’ visibility.
3.    Do One Thing Well. Rather than trying to have a presence EVERYWHERE online, determine the social site where you’ll both enjoy spending time, and get the most social media “bang for your buck.” Two sites that seem to be doing good things for those in sales right now are Facebook and Pinterest. But whichever site you choose, pick one and really learn it. Invest the time in becoming part of the community, have conversations, and avoid the temptation to just blast your advertisement and move on. This will bring you much greater success than a “finger in every social media pot.”
4.    Time Yourself. How long do you typically spend on social media tools? How does that translate into dollars? If you’re spending a lot of time on social media tools and it’s not translating into sales the way, say, meeting new clients face to face does, then maybe you should reevaluate how much time you’re spending online.
5.    Measure Your Results. One of the biggest mistakes business owners make when using social media is the failure to measure. Setting up a Facebook Page is not enough. You MUST know how it’s working for you, and if the activities on your page are bringing you closer to your goal. So start by defining a goal for your online efforts, and then look at the analytics of each tool, along with the sales you produce, to determine whether the activities you’re engaging in are worth the time you’re investing. At the end of the day, you’re in business to make money. Make sure the work you’re doing brings results.

By making slight adjustments to the way you do  social media marketing, you can enjoy big improvements which impact your bottom line positively.

Your Luck And Opportunities

There are many things in life that we cannot control, but your business doesn’t have to be one of them. Of course, luck does have a small part to do with success, but you can take actions to increase it. Don’t treat your business like a lottery ticket, doing nothing while hoping it works out. Take a look at our list of suggestions for increasing your luck and coming closer to realizing your dreams.
·         Lead with and focus on what you do best. Being aware of your skill set allows you to identify your own personal strengths. Use those strengths to make positive, memorable first impressions as well as integrating them into as much of your business as you can. For example, if you are quick-witted and easily make others laugh, don’t be afraid to lead off sales presentations, opportunity meetings, and even one-on-one introductions with a joke. Go a step further and integrate your unique sense of humor into all your business relationships when appropriate. When you can bring your strengths to the table, others will take notice.
·         Always be prepared. Although luck does play a small part in our lives, you can increase your chances of success by preparing yourself as much as possible. You wouldn’t go in to a final exam simply hoping that most of the questions are about topics you remember from the textbook; you would prepare yourself by reviewing the material, highlighting important points, and quizzing yourself before the day of the test. The same concept applies to your direct sales business. Rehearse your presentation before each party, even if you’ve been doing this for years. Create possible scenarios that might catch you off guard if you’re not ready. Calling a referral to book a possible opportunity meeting? Find out about the person’s interests and aspirations. Adequate preparation can be your most effective tool for finding success.
·         Be a connector to people and businesses. When you have a good experience with someone in business, take the initiative to share that experience with others. Be the one who refers friends, family, and customers to others without prompting. Put in a good word about your hair stylist to your cousin who is looking for a new place to go for a cut. Perhaps a customer is seeking out a service that you can’t provide; be the person who finds someone who does. Your role as connector will not be forgotten when an opportunity arises for someone to do the same for you.

·         Develop authentic relationships. This begins with showing a genuine interest in and sincere caring about others. Not all your relationships can or should be close ones, but they should all be authentic. People involved in your business in any way need to be able to trust you, be open with you, and want to be around you. Give others your full attention when interacting, and always follow through on your promises. Building good relationships is the foundation of a career in direct sales.

Fixing Your Marketing

If you build it, they will come.”  Fortunately for Kevin Costner’s leading character, that was true.  However, that isn’t exactly the case for small business owners.  Customers won’t just find you; you have to market to them.  The best thing we can do for our business is to learn from the mistakes of others, and then make better choices. Here are the most common marketing mistakes and how to fix them.
·         Underestimating the power of research – Think you’ve got that million dollar idea for a product or service?  Well before you invest significant amounts of money into such an idea, it is of utmost importance to do some serious market research and test your product/service with a real customer base.
·         Overestimating the power of research – Although this may seem contradictory to the previous statement, it is crucial to remember that emotions play a large part in customers’ decisions.  Yes, most consumers do their own research and respond well to the facts, but their emotions guide those decisions even more than they may realize, so connect with them on that level.  Keep this in mind when creating a marketing plan.
·         Ignoring the tried and true – As entrepreneurs, we want to be innovative with not only our products, but also our marketing strategies.  In your quest for originality, don’t spend too much time re-inventing the wheel.  Instead, familiarize yourself with existing tactics that have been successful for others.  Use these as the basis for your marketing techniques, and put your own twist on them so they are tailored to your particular business.
·         Fixing what isn’t broken – Your hard work and preparation have paid off, and you are enjoying a very successful promotion that you created yourself.  In fact, you’ve been reaping the rewards of this promotion for nearly a year.  It’s about time you switched it up and tried a different promotion right?  Wrong!  Just because you may be getting tired of it, don’t forget that an untapped market and new customers are discovering it for the first time.  If you really feel the need to try something different, keep what you have while testing out your new idea.  This way, you won’t lose out on time and profits if the results are less than satisfactory.
·         Lack of patience – Think of a memorable commercial you’ve recently seen.  Did it make you literally jump off your couch and head to the store for that product?  Probably not.  Remember that customers don’t act quickly.  When implementing a marketing strategy, patience is a virtue.  Give it some time to reach an audience and produce results.  Only then will you be able to tell if it is effective or not.
·         Casting too wide a net – You’ll never be able to be everything to everybody, so trying to be will only be a waste of time and money.  Figure out who your ideal customer is and focus on your target market.  By concentrating on a smaller niche, you will be able to satisfy unmet needs and wants of those customers.

Since marketing is such a subjective aspect of your business, it can be complicated and overwhelming.  Avoiding common pitfalls will save you time and help grow your business.  What else can you add to our list?

Here are some tips that can help you stay motivated through the summer months, and throughout the year!
1.    Create a success chart – write down and highlight every success no matter how small or large and hang it next to your calendar.
2.    Just like you frame your diploma or degree – In large bold type frame WHY you do your business and why you want to succeed.
3.    As you chart your successes – visualize, journal and enjoy every intimate sense of your accomplishment.
4.    Acknowledge and be realistic about the challenges your business faces, but also consider all the benefits of every business decision you make.
5.    Do not waste your time worrying – the more positive you are the more opportunities you will discover.
6.    Embrace every mistake or misstep as a learning experience – focus on how you can learn from the experience, what you’ve learned and how you can overcome it.
7.    Create a community of supporters, mentors, business associates and share your experiences with them. Enable them to chart your successes, share your learning experiences and celebrate with them.

As a business owner, you will of course face challenges along the way. That’s why it’s important to be mindful about keeping yourself motivated. By taking some time to keep yourself on track, you’ll enjoy greater success!
